Waputtaa

The time has come for Finlands annual totally insane Labour Day celebration. Check-list:

-student cap + possible student overalls
-balloons
-enought alcohol to last from Monday morning until Tuesday night
-lots of salty food + other important picknick items (simaa, munkkeja, silliä..)
-group of loud, restless friends
-warm and watertight clothes for the Tuesday-picknick
-Äpy

Take these and lots of "hyvä fiilis" and you're ready to hit the town with hundreds of thousands of other Finns. Don't be confused by the fact that even the most airtight Finnish people find the ability to speak two words of Swedish on this special day. Klara vappen (bara vatten hela natten!), or sober Labour Day, can be heard from all corners of Finland, creating a perfect definition for the word "irony". Irony or no irony, this Labour Day will undoubtedly be as crazy and hilarious as the previous ones. Finland is the place to be tomorrow. Hyvää vappua kaikille, klara vappen till alla!

Yes. This is my new neighbour.

And this is the lighthouse that you can see from my window.

And these are the new roomies as presented on our fridge.

Spring break

Spring is a strange time. I suppose with all the light that it brings along with it, you can see things more clearly, in a different light. And I'm not just talking about the dust that has been gathering onto tabletops and windowsills.

My reaction to spring this year has been different from what I'm used to. I find myself feeling a little stressed, tired and uneasy. Could it be the impending life changes that lay ahead of me; moving, graduating, uncertainty? I thought I would be the one leaping into the light, enjoying every minute of the freedom that we will all get to experience in a couple of weeks. On the other hand I have never been in this situation before. I guess we'll all just have to take it as it comes, one day at a time.

smoooooooothe

Beautiful. Just beautiful. And this guy was going to give me snowboarding lessons. I would be the coolest slickest lady boarder that ever lived if that would have happened. The help I got on MSN from him didn't quite do the trick. My a*s is still sore. Thanks anyway Tuke.

A bruise bruise here and an ouch ouch there..

Åre was windy, icy, snowy, cute, cold, hilarious, painful, confusing and enlightning.

I have finally learnt how to snowboard, as I have been planning to do for the past 6 years. I have bruised my knee a zillion times in the exact same spot (also my butt) and had ice cold powder snow in my underwear. I have driven through Sweden, slept in a tiny Punto and been in a car-mishap twice during the trip. I have also had the best nachos ever and lost all but one card game during the week. I have seen horses, moose, some sort of deer and a fox and managed to break the glass of my mobile phone when I fell on the damn thing during a storm on Thursday. Who would have guessed that snowboarding is quite difficult when the wind is blowing at 35-40 m/s??

Anyway, now I'm back in Finland. I have a new phone, I start my new job tomorrow and I still hurt in my knee and bottom. The thesis is hopefully still on my computer as I left it almost 2 weeks ago. I can't wait to start working on it again. Well, maybe tomorrow.
